Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, Ondo State, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, was recently celebrated for his contributions to adolescent health, receiving the Founders Award at the 13th World Congress on Adolescent Health over the weekend.
Isaac Oluyi, the Public Relations Officer of UNIMED, disclosed that Prof. Fatusi, a professor of community medicine, was among four recipients of the 2025 Founders Award and made history as the first African to be honoured in the 30-year history of the accolade.
Oluyi highlighted that the recognition was for Fatusi’s outstanding work in promoting adolescent health both in Nigeria and internationally. He stated, “The Congress is a four-yearly event of the International Association for Adolescent Health (IAAH). The IAAH Founders Award is a prestigious recognition of individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of adolescent health. Fatusi has been at the forefront of advancing the adolescent health agenda in Nigeria.”
The Vice-Chancellor of UNIMED, Prof. Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, also extended congratulations to the former VC, describing the award as a well-earned achievement. He said, “This is a feat well deserved. Fatusi is an embodiment of excellence, and this recognition is a reward for excellence. As an institution, we congratulate him.”
Prof. Fatusi’s recognition at the global congress shows his decades-long dedication to adolescent health, highlighting Nigeria’s growing influence in shaping policies and practices in this critical area of public health.
