As the world commemorates World Arthritis Day, Nigerian physician Dr. Chinonso Egemba, popularly known as Aproko Doctor, has drawn attention to the growing prevalence of arthritis among young people.
In a series of posts shared via X on Sunday, Egemba highlighted that arthritis is not solely a condition associated with aging, but one that increasingly disrupts the lives and ambitions of young Nigerians, including footballers, dancers, and entrepreneurs.
Referencing the 2025 World Arthritis Day global theme, the doctor encouraged individuals living with rheumatic diseases to continue pursuing their dreams despite the challenges that come with the condition.
He said, “We think arthritis is just ordinary body pain for our parents. A sign of old age. But I’ve seen the dreams of young Nigerians (footballers, dancers, entrepreneurs) put on hold by this disease.
Arthritis doesn’t care about your age; it cares about your joints. Today is #WorldArthritisDay, and the theme is Achieve Your Art. Protecting YOUR dream starts with protecting your joints now. Don’t let arthritis steal your future. Get diagnosed early.”
Medical experts describe arthritis as a chronic inflammation of the joints that leads to pain, swelling, stiffness, and reduced mobility. The condition can result from various causes, including injury, metabolic disorders, genetics, infections, or immune system dysfunction.
There are different forms of arthritis, and each requires a specific management approach.
Offering practical advice on how to manage the condition, Dr. Egemba noted that, “There’s no magic cure for most types of arthritis, but you are not helpless. You can use these 4 steps to take control:
“Movement is Medicine: I know it sounds crazy to exercise when you’re in pain, but the right movement is your friend. Stronger muscles act as a natural brace for your joints. Start with low-impact activities like brisk walking. This is kind to your joints.
“Your Kitchen is a Pharmacy: Focus on anti-inflammatory Nigerian food like Titus, greens like Ugwu, and spices like ginger and turmeric. Reduce processed snacks and sugary drinks.
“Reduce excess weight. This reduces the pressure on your knees. Then very importantly…
“Manage Your Mind: Arthritis can be exhausting and can make you start thinking too much. This is not a sign of weakness. Talk to someone you trust. Build a support system, too.”
He further emphasized that managing arthritis requires consistent effort, describing it as “a daily job”—one that, when approached with discipline and care, can help individuals continue to achieve their dreams despite the condition.
