Oyo State Hospital Management Board (OYSHMB), led by Dr Akin Fagbemi, has responded to recent claims by a group calling itself “Concerned Stakeholders for Good Governance in Oyo State.”
The board described allegations of financial mismanagement and mass resignation of doctors in Oyo as baseless and politically motivated.
Dr. Fagbemi stated that the health sector has improved under Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration.
He also addressed the claims about doctors leaving, clarifying that the movement is part of a national trend as professionals seek postgraduate opportunities or work abroad, and is not unique to Oyo, highlighting the presence of talented doctors in Oyo.
The Chairman confirmed that the board has recruited over 20 medical officers in the past year, with 10 of them starting work in the last two weeks. This recruitment is a testament to the commitment to maintaining doctors in Oyo.
To address the issue of vacancies, the Board has implemented an exit replacement policy approved by Governor Makinde.
“Just last week, we recruited over 15 new medical officers under this policy,” he added.
Regarding the financial claims, the OYSHMB stated that the introduction of an electronic payment system has curbed revenue loss and improved accountability.
The Chairman noted that since the switch to e-payment, revenue collections have more than tripled. He also dismissed reports of unauthorised POS machines and accounts as false.
In a final point, the board highlighted its partnerships with 13 visiting consultants from the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan and over 30 other universities for clinical training.
“Healthcare should never be sacrificed on the altar of politics. We are committed to maintaining and improving service delivery for the benefit of all residents in Oyo State,” the Chairman concluded.
