
TRIBUTE IN HONOUR OF LATE PROF PATRICK OMONUA ERAH, 30th March, 2025
The University of Benin Pharmacy Alumni Association received with shock, news of the passage of our Alumni Member, Mentor, distinguished, erudite, cerebral scholar and Academic par Excellence, Prof. Patrick Omonia Erah.
Prof Erah was born in Uromi in Edo State, Nigeria. He studied Pharmacy at the prestigious University of Benin, Benin City, graduating in 1986, and later had his PhD at the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom in 1997. He attended various training courses within and outside the country, as well as conferences.
He was a Professor in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacy Practice and had published many research articles in peer reviewed journals, and served as external examiner for different Universities locally and internationally.
He equally held many administrative positions within the University of Benin, served on different local, national and international committees, and was a consultant to The Global Fund, Nigeria’s National Assembly, the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria and different pharmaceutical industries in Nigeria.
He was a Fellow of the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists and was also a Resource Person to the College.
Prof Erah is credited with the computerisation of Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Benin in the early 2000’s. He was instrumental to the commencement of the Doctor of Pharmacy Programme (Pharm D) in the University. He was the founding President of African Society for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, and also Editor of Tropical Journal of Pharmaceutical Research, amongst others.
Prof Erah was an adjunct Professor in Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacy Practice at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island. He was the Director and founding member of Pharmacotherapy Group, a research group based at the University of Benin. He received many research and development grants from local and international bodies. He published several research articles in peer-reviewed journals.
He was an active member of the Alumni Association and was a devout Christian. Prof Erah was an Extra-Ordinary Minister of Holy Communion at the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City.
Prof Erah is survived by a wife and children. He will be sorely missed.
The Alumni Association hereby extends our heart felt condolences to the wife, children, Faculty of Pharmacy Staff and indeed the University of Benin community over the irreparable loss.
May God Almighty comfort his family and grant his soul eternal rest.
