Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has officially launched the maiden edition of the Ondo State Essential Medicines List (ODEML), a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening the state’s healthcare system.
Speaking at the launch event in Akure on Friday, the Governor—represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Taiwo Fasoranti—described the initiative as a reflection of his administration’s firm commitment to enhancing healthcare delivery. He emphasized that the project aligns with the Efficient Healthcare Delivery and Socio-Economic Welfare policy, which constitutes the first ‘E’ in the administration’s seven-point developmental agenda, “OUR EASE.”
Highlighting the critical role of safe, effective, and affordable medicines in a well-functioning healthcare system, Aiyedatiwa explained that the introduction of the ODEML for both adults and children aims to improve the availability and rational use of essential medicines across healthcare facilities in the state. He further noted that this initiative is consistent with both the National Essential Medicines List and global best practices as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to the Governor, ensuring a standardized, evidence-based reference for prescribing and dispensing medications will promote the rational use of medicines, enhance treatment outcomes, and improve overall healthcare efficiency. He also underscored the importance of the state’s Contributory Healthcare Scheme in facilitating the implementation of the Essential Medicines List by providing health insurance coverage and expanding access to quality healthcare services.
To ensure a steady and efficient supply of medicines, Aiyedatiwa highlighted that the Essential Medicines List would serve as a framework for planning, managing, and maintaining a consistent stock of quality medicines and health commodities at primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare facilities. This, he noted, would be achieved through the Ondo State Drugs and Health Commodities Management Agency (ODHCMA).
Additionally, the Governor pointed to the state’s investment in an ultra-modern, pharma-grade warehouse, designed to provide a secure, climate-controlled environment for medicine storage. This facility, he stated, will help mitigate stock shortages and support the rational distribution of medicines across health facilities.
Expressing appreciation for stakeholders who contributed their expertise to the project, Aiyedatiwa urged development partners to support the state in ensuring the continuous availability and affordability of essential medicines. Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to healthcare, he declared, “We will continue to invest in healthcare infrastructure, capacity building, and policy implementation to ensure a robust and sustainable health system in Ondo State.”
In his opening remarks, Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Prof. Simidele Odimayo, commended Aiyedatiwa’s dedication to the health sector. He highlighted key achievements such as the renovation of over 120 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs), the upgrade of several secondary healthcare facilities, and the soon-to-be-completed 250-bed teaching hospital.
Similarly, Chairman of the State Essential Medicines List Committee, Dr. Stephen Fagbemi, in his preface to the list, described it as a testament to the commitment of health sector leaders in ensuring that essential medicines remain accessible and affordable to Ondo State residents.
The event also saw strong representation from key partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO), APIN Public Health Initiative, the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria, the state chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association, and other stakeholders, all reaffirming their support for the initiative.
