The need for all hands to be on deck to improve the state’s healthcare system has been emphasised.
The Chairman of the Ondo State Hospitals’ Management Board (HMB), Dr. Taiwo Fasoranti, spoke during an assessment tour of some health facilities in Akure, the state capital, on Tuesday.
According to him, the state Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, is determined to tackle the challenges confronting secondary facilities to ensure a healthy population. He noted that it is important for health workers to perform their duties with utmost professionalism and commitment.
Speaking at the State Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Akure, Fasoranti, while commending the staff for their resolve to serve the country despite the exodus of medical personnel from Nigeria, noted that the facility occupies a strategic position in the health sector.
Praising the management for establishing a vocational centre for patients’ rehabilitation, he commended the Governor for establishing the board, noting that the board has been instrumental in sanitising the state’s healthcare system.
Assuring government support, he called for more commitment and dedication from the staff.
Speaking earlier, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Sunday Sajo, while welcoming the team, stated that the management has been proactive in raising the standard of mental health services in the state.
He revealed that the 60-bed facility, in collaboration with Rotary Club International, is establishing a drug rehabilitation centre, noting that the vocational centre has been helpful to patients.
While calling for government support to expand the vocational centre, he explained that there is always an influx of patients in the hospital due to the proliferation of social problems in Nigeria, especially substance abuse.
He commended the Permanent Secretary of HMB, Dr. Ayodele Adiji, for his support, calling for further government attention to ensure effective service delivery.
The team also visited the state’s Dentre centres, both at the State Specialist Hospital, Oke-Aro, and Oke-Eda in Akure.
Those on the team included Nurse Aarinola Adamolekun, Pharm. (Dr.) Taiwo Adefunrin, Dr. Wilson, and the Permanent Secretary of HMB, Dr. Ayodele Adiji.
