1) Conference noted with strong conviction that Clinical Pharmacy practice in Nigeria has very high prospects and it is the gateway to sustainable healthcare delivery, and as such it behooves government at all levels to entrench the full participation of Clinical Pharmacists in all practice areas and settings as stipulated by the National Drug Policy of year 2021.
2) Conference attendees also noted that, ten out of the twenty-four accredited Faculties of Pharmacy in Nigeria have commenced the award of Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (PharmD) programme. Conference attendees therefore appreciated the efforts of the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) in this direction and encouraged her to ensure all others engage in the PharmD programme.
3) Conference observed the obvious fact in our communities that community pharmacies remain the first port of call for many with health related complaints, and this underscores the importance placed on such facilities as primary healthcare centres and offer of relevant patient care services.
4) As a paradigm shift is critical in the country’s ailing health sector, conference charged government at all levels to utilize the specialist skills of Clinical Pharmacists to revitalize the health sector and improve patient care as obtainable in several climes across the globe.
5) With the bright horizons for improved patient care through Clinical Pharmacist interventions,
conference charged generalist clinical pharmacists to specialize in the various specialities of Clinical Pharmacy such as Cardiology Pharmacy, Infectious Disease Pharmacy, Nephrology Pharmacy, Paediatric Pharmacy, Endocrinology Pharmacy etc, which are offered as Fellowship courses at the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists and some foreign postgraduate pharmacy schools.
6) Conference resolved to take up the challenge thrown at her by the Rep of the Executive Governor of Lagos State to embrace newer tasks in the task shifting, task sharing policy of the federal government by ensuring Pharmacists embrace update training in the relevant clinical skills.
7) Conference calls upon the government and relevant stakeholders to immediately reclassify all drugs in the Nigerian drug space to capture the class of Pharmacist Initiated Medicines (PIM) or Pharmacist Only Medicines (PM), as Pharmaceutical Care is designed to assess, monitor, initiate, or modify medication usage for the benefit of patients.
8) Conference calls upon the government to immediately ensure that the Consultant Pharmacist Cadre and the doctor of pharmacy practice program are fully implemented in all the nation’s health care institutions as stipulated by the National Council on Establishment approval in 2020.
9) Conference calls upon the government to establish a National Policy On Clinical Pharmacy to help in implementing the great treasures of prospects of clinical pharmacy as a gateway to sustainable healthcare in Nigeria.
