The Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to bolstering local pharmaceutical manufacturing and innovation during the 98th Annual National Conference of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), currently ongoing in Kano.
According to Pharmanews, the governor was represented at the conference by the Head of Civil Service, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa, and he emphasised that the state government remains dedicated to fostering the growth of the pharmaceutical sector through supportive policies, infrastructure development, and strategic partnerships.
“We recognise the critical importance of a vibrant local manufacturing base. With the challenges of import dependency and rising global costs, it is time to look inward and strengthen our domestic capacity. The state is ready to collaborate with PSN and industry stakeholders to achieve this,” he stated.
Governor Yusuf also urged pharmacists and other healthcare sector players to intensify efforts toward expanding local pharmaceutical capacity and promoting innovation, describing it as essential for improving medicine security.
“The health of our people is non-negotiable. We will strengthen surveillance systems, support law enforcement, and ensure offenders face the full weight of the law. Pharmacists remain our trusted partners in this effort,” he added, highlighting the vital role of a strong pharmaceutical system in safeguarding public health.
Speaking at the official opening of the conference held at Bayero University Kano (BUK) New Site Convocation Hall, Governor Yusuf commended the PSN for its unwavering dedication to professional excellence and the protection of public health. He assured the Society of the state government’s continued support.
“I warmly welcome all delegates to our great state. This gathering is a crucial step in building a self-reliant pharmaceutical sector that ensures Nigerians have access to safe, effective and affordable medicines,” he said.
The event also featured goodwill messages from national health leaders, government officials, and representatives of professional and regulatory bodies.
Themed “Enhancing Pharmaceutical Innovation for Universal Health Coverage,” the PSN 98th Annual National Conference continues throughout the week, featuring technical sessions, exhibitions, and policy dialogues aimed at improving pharmacy practice and advancing Nigeria’s healthcare system.
